Not gonna lie—this book makes you WORK. After the quippy narrative voice of Gideon in the first book, this second installment throws all caution to the wind and does whatever the F it wants. Intermittent second person, anyone? How about being tossed head-first into multiple timelines and alternate memories? Yeah. Experimentation and rule-breaking abounded. Which as a fellow writer, was admirable, even inspiring; but as a reader who was regularly thinking “WTF is happening?!,” it was a challenge.
I think a 3.75 is both an inaccurate reflection of how much I enjoy Muir’s (and Harrow’s) voice & characterization & mind, but also, personally, the highest rating I could give. I’m certainly going to continue the series, but perhaps with a bit more mental preparation in advance.
