The MANIAC
by BenjamÃn Labatut
Benjamin Labatut shows, once again, that he is on par with the very geniuses he is so fond of animating. One of the greatest living writers, without a doubt, and this is a propulsive, heady novel that informs and enlightens as much as it entertains. He writes with such fascination and a love for rich, lavish detail.
The story lags a bit in the middle, and I was definitely confused by the pivot in the final third - but when it picked back up, the parallel storyline was almost as enticing as the dominant one. Not quite on the level of When We Cease to Understand... in terms of being a work of dumbfounding brilliance, but a fabulous piece of work on its own. Can't wait to see what he does next.
