Educated by Tara Westover
4.5
challenging dark sad fast-paced

this terribly beautiful book at its core asks quintessentially human questions - who am i? what do i owe myself, my family, and the world? what is truth?

westover writes with the prose of such an adept storyteller, carrying you through her childhood and what is essentially a lack of and an acquisition of knowledge. from what sources and whether to trust those sources is a central theme.

i’ve since read some responses to the of course controversial book, including the description of her mothers response book. without having read them in depth, all i can say is that westover relays a challenging and deeply personal story with respect both to herself and her family who have both hurt and loved her. she admits to her own shortcomings and describes her thought patterns in such a recognizably human and relatable way. i think there is something powerful and moving to be said about how to evaluate our knowledge and where it comes from, especially in the continuing rise of technology and propaganda.

i was chilled reading this book and will continue to turn it over in my head for many years to come
