True Grit by Charles Portis
3.0

This was my first western book. In the past year or so, I've tried to branch out into other genres and have been pleasantly surprised at how much I've enjoyed them. Not sure that is the case with westerns. This book was good, but I don't feel the same as most reviewers who gave it 4 or 5 stars. It does a good job of reeling you in from the very beginning and I was interested in what was going to happen right away and found that I was 1/3 of the way through the book in no time at all. Then, for me, it kind of stalled. I grew tired of all the events that happened in the pursuit of Chaney--they seemed repetitive and there was no excitement in the chase. It wasn't until Mattie happens upon him accidentally that I really even cared to finish the book and that was in the last 20 pages. Those last pages were filled with nail-biting adventure and revealed the true grit that Mattie had as well as the good heart that seemed hidden in Rooster and LaBoeuf. I'm glad I read the book, but didn't like it enough to pursue other westerns just yet.
