Lady in the Van
by Alan Bennett
emotional
funny
reflective
slow-paced
Alan Bennett writes with genuine fondness for this bizarre character who practically landed on his doorstep. The book takes episodes which I'm sure were extremely frustrating at the time, but turns back to them with rose-tinted glasses of memory. I saw the film when it came out and Maggie Smith played the crotchety Miss Shepherd perfectly. A quick read in Alan Bennett's classic style.
Graphic: Mental illness, Excrement, Religious bigotry
Minor: Racial slurs
