I went into this with high expectations because, duh, it’s Toni Morrison—and it did not let me down. This is a short story about two women who grow up in a shelter together. One of them is Black, and one is white. Morrison never revealed which is which.

It’s incredible to read this at the point when they're children and consider what can be revealed in the reader as you attempt to decipher who is Black and who is white. What does it say about perception? Assumptions? Stereotypes? What type of bond have the two women formed, if any, and which of them came out stronger? And why? I gave it 5 stars because it’s a genius story that I enjoyed all 96 pages of.
