Before Shannon and Johnny there was Joey and Aoife. When the two meet on the first day of secondary school, a connection takes root and doesn’t let go. The two spend years being in each other’s space, talking around each other and extending olive branches when the other needs it, but Joey keeps Aoife at arms length. He can’t jeopardize his job working for Aoife’s father and he has no mental or emotional space for a girlfriend - not when he’s raising his siblings, supporting his mother through trauma after trauma and taking his fathers abuse to try to keep anyone else from having to. But Aoife sees Joey like no one ever has and she refuses to let go. I knew Joey’s story would be gut wrenching, but it was more so than I expected. The way he continuously holds on by a thread for his siblings shows incredible strength and the purest love. He does very little for himself and that’s where Aoife comes in. She wants Joey to see that he is more, that he can be more and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. This was just the beginning of their story and I need to brace my heart for the rest.
