This was such a cute book about a young girl finding her magic and also learning to come to terms with her parents' deaths. While I've read Roshani Chokshi before, I hadn't read any of her middle grade/children's books. I also didn't know she was Filipina. I always think her writing is beautiful and this was no exception. It only really fails to get a four-star rating from me because I wanted so much more from the plot, but I had to remind myself that it is for younger readers. Alas.
