The Yoke of Jesus: A School for the Soul in Solitude by Addison Hodges Hart

5.0

Hart's The Yoke of Jesus is theological rich and immensely practical, and I'm happy to say that Addison is the less sassy of the two brothers.

Hart's book is a primer on Christian asceticism. It focuses on individual spiritual disciplines that I would say are more unique than Foster's Celebration of Discipline or Willard's Spirit of the Disciplines in that it emphasizes the mind as the battleground between "unclean spirits" and the "Being" of God. This emphasis will be familiar to Eastern Orthodox readers, and Hart is clear in his explanation of practices like the Jesus Prayer and other meditative methods that force us to reexamine the mystery of our existence. Hart's approach, though, is unlike the typical "new-age" writer because he is unapologetically Christian in his claims and he surrounds all his spiritual disciplines with Scriptural references (in context!). In fact, one of the chapters is on studying Scripture and the Christian tradition to ensure that his readers won't fall away from orthodoxy.

I highly recommend this book for Christians who are looking for ways to deepen their relationship with Christ.
