I thoroughly enjoyed the first two volumes of the American Royals series; originally, the series was meant to be a duology, however, after reading the ending to the second book, I knew the door was open for further volumes. With the fourth book due to come out later this year, I finally got around to listening to the third book, Rivals, which sees Beatrice sitting precariously on the throne of America, the first woman to do so, and at her young age, unsure of her position.

The League of Kings is meeting in America for the first time, so Beatrice is put to the test. She’s also dealing with Teddy, her betrothed, whom she didn’t marry when pressured, but is in love with and sees a future with.

Told from the same POV as the other books, Beatrice, her younger sister Sam, Sam’s best friend, Nina, and former girlfriend to Sam’s twin Jeff, Daphne, the pattern continues yet changes, too. In this volume, Sam’s involvement with Marshall, the future Duke of Orange, leads to some big decisions, as Sam is heir to the throne, but so is he. Somehow in this volume we see a more sympathetic view of Daphne, which wasn’t necessarily a good thing, because now she and Nina are getting along. There’s also an introduction of a new bad girl, Gabriella, which I found superfluous. Just keep Daphne as the antagonist, I say.

I enjoyed the continuation of the stories, although I didn’t necessarily agree with some of the twists and turns. Jeff is pretty useless as a character but is essential for all the women in his life to scheme and fall over themselves in order to get his attention. That said, I’m anxiously awaiting volume 4, which comes out later this year. I’m enjoying this alternative version of the United States with the Washington family as the head of a monarchy.
