Lovely War by Julie Berry

5.0

This is one of those books that can live rent free in my mind forever. It was simply beautiful, unique, and heartbreaking all at the same time. I know a lot of people don't necessarily enjoy reading historical fiction based around war, but this one is just undeniably special.

Lovely War is a love story so beautiful that it can only be told by the God's. Which is exactly what happens! In New York, 1942 Aphrodite (the goddess of love) and Ares (the god of war) are confronted about their affair, by Aphrodite's husband Hephaestus. When Aphrodite is forced to explain her meaning of love. She begins to tell the story of 4 complete strangers falling in love amidst all of the chaos of war. Of course a war story can not be told without a few different people's perspectives. So, she calls upon her fellow Gods and Goddess to help her along the way.

In her story...We meet Hazel, a young piano player who is very sheltered and shy. That is until she meets James, a young man who is spending his last night before he heads off to War at the party Hazel is preforming at. Then we have Collete, a girl who spends her time volunteering at a shelter/living quarters for soldiers. This is where she becomes friends with Hazel and meets Aubrey. Aubrey is an African American musician who travels with the army to preform for them. Each couple is sent on their own adventures of love. Whether it's Hazel's fear of losing James, James fear for his sanity, or Aubery and Collete's fear of their interracial relationship being uncovered... each and every aspect is mesmerizing. Not to mention, made even better through the Godly Narrators.

I love how this book is a mixture of the hard truth during this era (racism, war, death, and fear) and the mythical world of deities with immense power. It just added such a unique way to tell a war story! I think anyone would love reading this book! It was just so powerful and addictive. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
