The Queen of Attolia
by Megan Whalen Turner
SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE THIEF.
(Which, of course, is what everyone says.)
It's so complicated and dark and visceral. I like that MWT doesn't take the easy way out, as with most fantasies, where the author writes a magical way to deal with a handicap.
She defies so many conventions with this fantasy series, from gender norms, to romantic tropes (ha!), to representation and diversity. All before the We Need Diverse Books movement, and in the eye of the Harry Potter hurricane.
