Chains of Command is very much a book of its time. Clearly when he wrote this book, Dale Brown had some strong opinions. About the US not killing Saddam Hussein during Desert Storm. About Bill and Hillary Clinton, and how involved she was in the government. About the focus of the US military shifting to reserves. About women in combat. About the shape of post-USSR Russia.
There is no Patrick McLanahan here. No Brad Elliot. Not even any B-52s. Brown created a whole new cast of characters, though Daren Mace is pretty McLanahan-ish. Russia attacks Moldova, then nukes Ukraine for getting involved. Turkey is Ukraine's new ally, and the US is reluctantly drawn into the battle. I think Dale Brown is trying to support women in combat but his way of doing it just comes across as way too sexist. His criticisms of the White House (and dislike of Hillary) just go too far. There's plenty of flying, some really good insight on what it's like to be in the Reserves, and good action scenes, but the rest of the book really detracts from it. Maybe 2.5 stars.
