I Don't Want to Eat That Thing! by R.K. Vetter

4.0

I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

Welcome to the first of three reviews for 3 books in the I Don’t Want to-series by R.K. Vetter! There are 8 books in total, check out the author’s blog so you can see them all. Look forward to my review for I Don’t Want to Share My Bear on May 16th and I Don’t Want to Say Goodbye on May 31st!

In this first book we come across the thing that all kids have, some foods you just DON’T want to EAT! Oh no. Definitely nope. And what happens when a boy has to stay at his granny for 5 WHOLE days. He has a list, with some things that I was like, I could understand kids wouldn’t like and some that I was confused by. Who doesn’t like berries? Who doesn’t want key lime pie?? I was already hoping that granny would just dare to go for it and feed him the foods he didn’t like. And she does! Each day she picks a food from his list and makes dinner/lunch/dessert with it. From sandwiches and berries as side to brussel sprouts and a nice steak. I had such a laugh at the reactions of the boy BEFORE along with what he said about the food. Like with the brussel sprouts: “I don’t want to eat that stink! Take it away to grind in the sink.” He really is creative with his insults to food and I loved it.

But I also loved that his grandma had a secret weapon to make him at least try out the foods. For each of the foods she has something special, though I am still not sure what Low-Fat topping is? Is it whipped cream? I loved that grandma took time and effort and help him out. Yes, it was of course a bit magical how easily everything went, but I don’t mind! In real life it probably won’t not work like this, because at times it isn’t just a disgust for an unknown (or known) food but also textures and such, but it works in a book world.

Oh, but I think that for the last day I would have liked her to make something he actually wanted to eat and something he looked forward to. Maybe she did and we didn’t see, but I would have just liked to see that.

The art is a lot of fun. I like the style and the faces/reactions of both grandma and the boy are just perfectly drawn.

All in all, this is a fun book perfect for kids who just DON’T like a certain thing. Grandma tells us, for most, what she uses, so you can try that with your kids as well, who knows, maybe it wil work! Recommended!
