SCUM Manifesto
by Valerie Solanas
I just read this non fiction novel (or should I say manifesto) by the infamous 'feminist ' Valerie Solanas and I'm genuinely so confused.
The book is quite a difficult read not really because it's content is off putting but because it's incredibly hyperbolic and ridiculous. I haven't spoken to anyone who's read it before ,I only discovered it because I was looking up Andy Warhol (whom she apparently attempted to murder ) and I thought it could be intresting. A novel which aims to express in exact words my genders impact on our world one that is apparently infamous. But what you get here isn't worth the time .
The manifesto is consistently referencing a notion made in it's introduction that to be male is to be deficient and incomplete. That all men are horrible the way they are because they want to be female. Which had it been given the critical lense could've been an intresting exploration into the gender spectrum the dialogue of gender envy so on so on but instead becomes a catch all for any observed male shortcoming. Or even any male state whether it's fatherhood (which is equated to a mental illness),employment (equated to an inadequacy) or love( which is diminished as a need to possess). It's not nuanced at all, doesn't try to make a point. Rather it spouts jabs and surface level spiel and attempts to convey a deeper finding. A truth that one sex is hopless, inferior and unnecessary.
This book confuses me especially because though written by a lesbian woman has many instances of homophobia towards MLM. It even goes so far to say :
"love can’t exist between two males,"
Like is this book satire or supposed non fiction? Because it's positioned as an research paper but is imbued with no academic merit. No credibility to any possible research done. It's very weird really.
