Renegades by Marissa Meyer
4.0
Honestly I really loved this book, I sped right through it, would have given it 5 stars but many plot lines in this were predictable and the superhero genre is pretty saturated right now that it didn't feel all too surprising. Still an interesting read though especially all the dramatic irony that happens as our 2 main characters keep secrets from each other but not the reader.
This book definitely gave me Shatter Me cross Legend vibes. It's premise is freshing as we see superheros running the country and deal with the squashed out villains trying to make end meet (and take their revenge).
The characters were great, everyone had their motivations especially our 2 main leads. Nova was so multi-talented and it was nice to see that she's able to be adaptable outside of her abilities.
SPOILERS
Nova believing in the Renegades, despite them not showing up and that guy killing her whole family. Then her uncle Alec came in and then revealed he's Ace Anarchist... Not gonna lie, I thing there's a high chance that he orchestrated their deaths.
It's so cool that Adrian's parents are a gay couple and they're the gay POWER COUPLE.
It's nice to see Nova not actually believing in the anarchists per se but in revolution and freedom from superhero rule. .
So (according to Ace which I honestly doubt the validity of this story..) the Renegades promised to help Nova's father cause he seemed protection from them. A competing villainous gang had came to kill the family because he delayed on giving some goods (doesn't make sense to be honest, that doesn't solve the issue). Then few months later Ace got killed too..
We don't know the identity of Phobia, and honestly at the start I thought it was Ace. Ace who showed Nova her worst fears of her family getting killed, but in actuality he either killed them himselves or they died in another way, that's why the Renegades never came to help them.
Nova's fake superhero moniker is.. Insomnia??? That's pretty lame
