Milkweed
by Jerry Spinelli
I feel pretty mixed about this book. The protagonist is far too naive about what is going on in Warsaw and his absolute lack of knowledge about Jewish people aside from them being the target of hate (which inexplicably makes him want to be Jewish). There is little of the context needed to understand the story - nothing about the rich lives of Jews and how they were an accepted part of society. It was also home to the one of if not the largest Jewish population in Europe. Instead they are portrayed as dirty and poor from the outset. There are better books about the Holocaust and I found the main character totally unbelievable in his lack of awareness about the horrors around him.
