"You always remember your first time."
This installment of the Gaunt's Ghosts series was interesting. Abnett infused far more humor (although it be gallows humor) into this one, than any of his previous novels. I actually found myself laughing out loud at times, which is strange when a bunch of characters you love are being killed by horrible warp beasts and demons from another dimension.
It's a much slower pace than any of the previous books, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. We get to see more of the Inquisition, as the beginning of the book was partially a court drama, then we transition into the battle front. We spend a long time focused on characters who die, which happens in all Abnett's books, (and the one's who live almost always join the ghosts) but it gives the war a little more heart. It shows that not all of the imperial guard are excellent soldiers, it shows that some of the players are fallible (Not just dicks, like in previous books), but redeemable.
We also get to see the ghosts that came back from Gereon, and a bit of what happened to them, and through them, you find a little more out about the universe we are traversing together.
