What a delightful read. It's not just a foray into the world of embroidery. It's a transnational exploration of the art of various kinds of stitching. And through that history Hunter does a beautiful job weaving various stories about the ways various stitchers have used their craft as a means of resistance, as a way to break gender barriers and promote their craft as high art, among so many other things. The only real criticism I have of this book is that Hunter didn't include the images of the artistry she describes, although it did send me and my student scouring for such images which was quite a lovely part of the reading journey.
