The Communist Manifesto: A Graphic Novel
by Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels
The Illustrations are the highlight of this edition, without a doubt. I'm not particularly good at reading ye olde writing, especially in non fiction form, so that was a bit of a slog if I'm honest. I was in Prague for a few days and brought it along to break up the monotony of travelling, I thought it might be especially poignant seeing as Prague had actually experienced "communist" rule. I've put it in inverted commas because like most systems labelled as communist it was actually more like an authoritarian partial socialism and would not have please Marx at all.
The start of the book has a good introduction into how the original manifesto came about, which makes it seem like a bit of a rush job. There is ample evidence that this short book was never meant to be a blueprint for ruling nations, but more like the starting point of a discussion.
If you, like me, have an interest in what Karl Marx meant by communism then I really recommend this book over just a plain text version. The illustrations, aren't explanatory pictures, but their own dark tale. They smack you in your soul in a way that Marx's antiquated words may not be able to.
