Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
4.0

Ruby Dee's narration was perfection - possibly the best I've ever heard.
I'm still processing how I feel about the story. The ending was quite unexpected, to me. I loved much of the language, and the characters' names - especially Motorboat and Tea Cake. Tea Cake's initial courtship of Janie gave me a perma-smile - I really loved some of his lines. Issues of race, sex, and class were raised, but not in a modern way. I actually quite enjoyed the quiet approach, rather than the preachiness we are hit over the head with in today's books. It was interesting to learn about some Florida history, and I was fascinated by the different community reactions to the hurricane - most particularly the Seminoles. I'm still chewing on Janie and Tea Cake's love, though - it definitely wasn't what I was expecting, from the description of the book.
I'm glad I read this, and even more glad I listened to it. I'm actually not sure I would have gotten through the book if I hadn't heard it read in the vernacular. This is another example of a classic work better read aloud than on the page.
