⭐️ARC Review⭐️
Ryan accidentally catches the attention of Callum, a mercenary who kills pedophiles in his free time, when Callum thinks Ryan is abusing a child. Luckily, it’s cleared up that Ryan is NOT an abusive pedo, which really is the best way to start a friendship💀😂
Callum is such a fun psycho baby. I loved his dialogue and found his internal thoughts humorous to read. Ryan is his opposite- serious, likes to be in control, and not impulsive. Ryan is extremely cautious of Callum initially (y’know…after almost being killed for a crime he didn’t commit), but warms up to Cal when his truth and background for how he became a mercenary is revealed. Ryan also has his own issues- being constantly bullied as a child for being a mortician’s son, losing his dad, not knowing if he likes men- but Cal sees him and they help each other heal
I love the little bits of found family we see. It’s definitely heavily implied Theo (Ryan’s sister) and Cassandra (Callum’s older sister) will get a story and Vox (Callum’s best friend/mercenary buddy) and Naomi (Callum’s younger sister) will also get a story. I cannot wait to see more cameos of all of them together!
Though this is marketed as a dark paranormal MM romance, I would have to disagree on the paranormal part. Yes, Ryan can see and communicate with the dead but it is not a major plot point that it should be labeled as the genre- it’s maybe in like 5-10% of the book. It does adds to the plot (especially towards the end) but it is not the backbone of the storyline. We do get a little Deathtrap cameo, which is paranormal! I also personally found this book on a decent spice level but not overly spicy. There were a couple of explicit sexual scenes that lead up to the first sex scene, which did not happen until 78%. Definitely a story that was more banter/plot/character driven than spice driven
Overall, I enjoyed the book and can’t wait for the series to continue!
what to expect:
- MM romance
- dark romance
- grumpy/scary sunshine
- fear kink
- dub/noncon
- opposites attract
- touch him and die (both ways)
- dual POV
rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25
spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5
