Harem: The World Behind the Veil by Alev Lytle Croutier
Did not finish book.
I didn't read the whole book. I started strong, reading everything and admiring the illustrations, but then my interest level drop down. And that's not because it is badly written, it just not something that I find interesting. There is a lot of history in the stories, and this is not something that I am good at and particularly interested in. Details of history, wars, and politics of conquering lands and who whom and why are not something I enjoy reading.
However, from the parts that I did read I learned a lot about the overall politics of harem, who are the women in the harem, what they do, what they eat, where they do all the things. Photos and pictures that are added throughout the book to illustrate the stories are amazing, and really spark imagination. I gained the knowledge that will be useful for understanding stories with motif of harem, soutanes, eunuchs, like [b:And I Darken|27190613|And I Darken|Kiersten White|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1449153532s/27190613.jpg|41682914] that had all of them.
