Daughters of the Bamboo Grove by Barbara Demick

challenging dark emotional slow-paced

For non-adoptees, this is a very comprehensive look at the true forces (evangelism, women's rights in both China and the US, China post-Mao, etc.) that contributed to the adoption complex in the 90s and 2000s. Barbara remains focused on the human people affected by these statistics, which makes a pretty compelling read (esp. once the twins reunite).
