I love what GGK does. He wants to tell a story, and he sets the characters in a period of history we're familiar with, but, he tells a story about how ordinary people can sway extraordinary events. He adds a slightly fantastical spin and adds his own characters. While it's not France, it's inspired by medieval France.
I think you can enjoy this either as a fan of fantasy or as a fan of historical fiction. At the end of the day, it's mostly about the people and the choices they make.
