This is the second book in The Öland Quartet by Johan Theorin. I read the first book, Echoes from the Dead, a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the mix of mystery and thriller. In The Darkest Room, Theorin continues to mix mystery with thriller. We follow Katrine and Joakim Westin who move into Åludden's large farm in northern Öland. It is said that the house is built of timber from a ship that has fallen into the flock. Soon they will hear some rumors about the place. Such as, of course, is just grim and superstition. Or? It will not be long before mysterious things begin to happen.
I am incredibly fond of Johan Theorin's books. The best part of his books are the mix between mystery, the supernatural and thriller. In The Darkest room the supernatural is very present without taking over the story.
This is not an action-packed thriller, it's neither scary, it’s more of a slow moving story. There are several different characters, and Theorin is good at describing them. All characters feel real and are interesting in their own way. The common thread for Theorin's island quartet is the character Gerlof Davidsson. He is an older gentleman who lives on the island and likes to solve mysteries and riddles.
This book takes place during the winter and Theorin captures the mood in a good way. I as a reader could really imagine the thick snow, the cold winds and the chilly evenings.
This is a moving story about sorrow, love and the supernatural. There is no doubt that Theorin is a great writer! I look forward to reading the other books in the Öland Quartet.
