The final scheme of the Scarlet Pimpernel and his league saved this book from being a total wreck, so I give it a half-hearted two stars. But (as Sir Percy would say) Odd's life, what an exhausting journey it was to get there. The heroines were frustratingly dim (so much so that the final scene is an apology from one of them) and the narrative was often so long-winded that it underminded the suspense. But, still, the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men are dear to my heart, and I expect I'll read another book or two.
