Balancing on Blue
by Keith Foskett
adventurous
medium-paced
To focus on the positives first, I really enjoyed the first chapter which introduced us to each character from their own perspectives - to have some context about each character prior to the hike was pretty neat. Last chapter was cool for the same reasons, seeing what each of the characters ended up doing post-hike. Foskett also does well with imagery, painting vivid mental pictures of the various scenes he encountered on the trail.
Most of my thoughts on this book are not great, however. Most disappointing was the misogyny and blatant disrespect he regularly showed towards female hikers (it’s so bad that I almost stopped reading each time he brought up one specific hiker) and the way that he wrote about women in general.
Lastly, the editing was shoddy at best… there were so many errors in punctuation and enough misspellings to make me think there was no editing at all. I hope I can find another AT memoir written by a woman, or perhaps someone not as arrogant and cocky as Foskett.
