This book was so much better than I expected from the cover! It was like inheritance games but with a social Justice twist that was so interesting and powerful. I loved the friendship between Candace and Brandon that blossomed over a love of books, puzzles, and solving the mystery of Candace’s grandma’s letter. I also loved reading about the past — it was much more explicit about the realities of being Black in the 1950s in the south than I expected from the cover, which seems geared towards young audiences. This is a great book for middle school students to read and learn about why knowing and recognizing our history is so important.
