One of Us is Next is the sequel to Karen M. McManus’ One of Us is Lying, and takes place a year after the events of the first instalment of the series. The sequel follows Bronwyn’s sister Maeve, as well as her close friend Knox, and their new friend Phoebe. They find out, along with the rest of Bayview High, that someone has created a Truth or Dare game for Bayview’s students to take part in, a game that has deathly consequences and too many similarities to Simon Kelleher’s About That. It takes Maeve, Knox, and Phoebe working together to find out who is hosting the game and why. My favourite character was Knox, as he’s a sweetheart who really goes out of his way to be kind to everyone, although most of the characters are likeable. It’s hard to dislike any of the characters as they all have flaws but their motivations are understandable, and I don’t feel like we see enough of the “villain” to really hate them. I recommend this book because it’s an interesting and equally gripping follow-on from One of Us is Lying. I wish we got to see more of the original Bayview Four, but I’m glad to see that they’re all thriving. “We’re all afraid of putting ourselves out there and not getting anything in return. The thing is, though, nobody looks back on their life thinking, ‘Damn, I wish I’d been less honest with the people I care about.’”
