I loved this book. Jane Eyre is one of my most favorite classic books and this was an excellent modern retelling. It captured all the original injustices and classism, has incredibly witty prose, humor, heartache, loneliness, forgiveness, and love. I didn’t want it to end. I was caught up in the language as much as the tale. And all the little throwbacks to the original were just cherries on top of an already great update: the law firm has a Thornfield in the name; her first friend at the office is Adele. Chef’s kiss. The only thing that makes me sad, is that this will be (is) classified as a romance novel, and so many readers will miss it for that reason alone. And we could endlessly debate the validity of genre classifications but the fact remains there will always be people who are dismissive of certain genres and I feel bad that they’re missing out on such great literature. I loved it and wouldn’t want anyone to miss such an elegant, wonderfully written book. Highly recommend.
