Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

funny mysterious tense medium-paced

4.0

This was a re-read – my boyfriend was giving this a go on my recommendation and I wanted to remind myself of the plot. I read Yellowface when it was first released, having treated myself to the special edition hardback, but as I had a particularly bad bout of gastroenteritis during my initial read I struggled to remember exactly what happened. It was as good as the first time; June is such an unlikeable main character but I still felt somewhat sympathetic towards her for much of the story. I’ve not read any of the author’s other books – I’m not a big fantasy reader, which much of Kuang’s output falls under – but maybe this year I’ll pluck up the courage to attempt Babel, which has been sat on my shelf waiting for me for a couple of years.
