The Shining by Stephen King

2.25

Wasn't what I'd expected at all. Really hated the unnecessary uses of the n word and racist dialogue when the book itself was not based around racism. Really dislodged me from the whole reading experience and made me uncomfortable knowing Stephen King is white and seemed to take too much enjoyment out of using it. Also the sexualization of pretty much every woman in the book was really unrealistic and unnecessary, and was blatant in the way this book was tailored to the male gaze. Aka women written by men where the focus is their body in completely unnecessary contexts and in ways that just made no sense.

Hallorann is the MVP of this book, he's the main reason I kept reading. Him and Danny and Wendy. I really liked the plot but the execution with so many unnecessary slurs and misogyny just made me uncomfortable and took away from the story. 2.25 stars, it was fine I'd say.
