Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
4.0

I'm wavering about how to rate this book. Enjoyable throughout, but, in the beginning, this didn't feel new or different from any other self-help, psychology, and/or educational messaging I've heard before (you don't need to remind the early childhood teacher of the importance of play, creativity, and risk-taking). I enjoy Elizabeth Gilbert (City of Girls was one of my favorite books last year!), so hearing her voice in my head (I read this as an audio book) was soothing and reassuring. If you are feeling down or discouraged, I would highly recommend this as an antidote. For the first half to two-thirds of the book, I'm feeling like this is 2.5 or 3 stars--and the best thing I got from this was her story about Ann Patchett which then led me down the YouTube rabbit hole of listening to Ann Patchett talks. Then, in the latter part of the book, I found myself scribbling down words, phrases, and ideas--eventually filling up nearly two pages of the reading journal I keep. So, now I'm thinking that this warrants at least 3.5 or 4 stars. Regardless, I do recommend sticking it out to the end. The lobster story makes it more than worth it.
