The Devils is the first book/audiobook by Joe Abercrombie that I’ve listened to and it certainly won’t be the last. Humerous, chaotic, compelling and poignant; it’s a epic fantasy novel that doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet still also manages to be heart-wrenching when you least expect it.

The Devils features a group of unique and dangerous individuals tasked with escorting Alex, a thief and recently discovered heir to a royal throne, to claim her birthright.

Hijinks thus ensure. Often very bloody ones.

Listening to the audiobook narrated by Steven Pacey was an incredible experience and one that I would honestly do immediately again if I had the time. The different voices that he uses for the characters: such as Jakob’s gravelly intonation, Balthazar’s shift between arrogance and exasperation and Sunny’s monotone, coupled with the author’s often-witty dialogue, made them sound so wonderfully realized.

The audiobook is over twenty-five hours long and I never felt that the story was dragging. Though I did need to repeat certain parts on occasion, as the battle scenes sometimes had a frenetic quality that required more focus due to the many characters involved.

The aforementioned characters are very diverse: a magician, a vampire, a werewolf, an elf, a jack-of-all-trades, a monk and an immortal warrior-each with their own struggles, flaws and personal motivations. Several chapters are provided from most of their perspectives and it was very effective in making me feel attached to them as they completed their arduous journey.

The ending is quite bittersweet, but I am pleased that there will be further books in this series.
