Act Your Age
by Eve Dangerfield
Mind the trigger warnings on this one. Themes include BDSM, DDLG, forced seduction, stepfather/stepdaughter role playing
Def the most taboo book I've ever read but ultimately liked the book. It was difficult to reconcile my empathy for people who have experienced the things that they're role playing with their enjoyment of it. I would prob need a licensed therapist to help me do that. While I was uncomfortable with the role playing I have to say that the author does do a good job of reminding you that these are two consenting adults. (For example, in the first role play scene they break character to discuss the weirdness of women's clothes.)
The author does a lot of really great things beyond the kinky spice that make this book worth reading. I love the MMC. Tyler is deeply flawed and not in that tedious way where he's a billionaire and his flaw is that he's possessive. Tyler is 45, middle management, he's seen some shit, he drinks too much, wallows in self pity and believes his best days are behind him. I love the way that the author explores his shame and his fears around his kink. I loved how the FMC is the one who has the background knowledge about their shared kink and largely brings Tyler into that world. The few other BDSM themed romances I've read have universally been Doms bringing their Subs into the lifestyle.
The FMC is also wonderfully done. Again, I really liked the exploration around her feelings about her kink. I generally find internal monologuing tedious and repetitive but Kate's is not that. I also loved that even though she has a massive crush on Tyler, she's not enthralled by everything he does. Tyler does things that get under her skin sometimes which I felt was probably a more realistic representation of actual relationships. She's also way more self aware than he is (which is also, probably, a realistic representation of relationships). I found her longing for connection (not just romantically) very relatable.
Finally, 95% of the side characters are absolutely great and really added value to the story. I say 95% because I knew I didn't like Maria from the word go and then I was right. All of the other derby girls and Georgie are lots of fun to read.
Ultimately, I have a hard time recommending this book because of the type of play that they engage in but it did make me curious about the psychology of people who engage in these types of kink. I kind of do want to do more research but I'm also kind of scared of what my browser history is going to look like. Please consume responsibly.
