North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
4.0
A very interesting experience, most of all for the insights into social history during the industrial revolution and some of the contemporary insights into town vs. country, and the rise of materialism. Labour relations and the first cries of a burgeoning socialist consciousness are here too. It is well written and engaging, however, its weakness lies, for me at least, in the sense that there is a love story tacked onto the whole narrative that never seems to fit or feel comfortable. In short, I did not believe it, but there is much to admire here even so. 7/10
