The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente

5.0

I didn't know what all I was getting into with this book. I read Patrick Rothfuss' glowing review for it here on GoodReads and decided that I should make time for it.

This was a magical, delightful adventure start to finish. I've read a lot of books in the past two years, but only a handful made me smile with simple, childlike joy as each page and chapter unfolded. This is one of them. The story starts off familiar - a girl with a troubled home life is spirited away to Fairyland - but promptly takes a couple of twists and turns as the journey unfolds before us, before ending right where you would expect a story like this to end. The story has lost nothing in remaining true to form, and there is a lot of comfort in telling the same kinds of tales again with a fresh storyteller to interpret them through. Especially for a children's/YA novel, there is a lot of value in the familiar done well.

If you remember curling up with a parent or loved one to read stories together, a chapter at a time, even when you got a little older and were more likely to read books on your own than with someone else, then this is a book for you.
