The Thief of Always by Clive Barker
5.0

This book has one of the best opening paragraphs I've ever read:

"The great gray beast February had eaten Harvey Swick alive. Here he was,
buried in the belly of that smothering month, wondering if he would ever find
his way out through the cold coils that lay between here and Easter."

Everything about this book is perfect. I was immediately drawn into Harvey's world. I could relate to his existential boredom as it took me back to being a child with nothing to do. Why wouldn't he jump on the chance to take a vacation to Hood's Holiday House? What unfolds is a classic tale of "be careful what you wish for." This book has lovable characters, disgusting antagonists, and plenty of magic. I am so glad I read it. I can't wait to pick up another Clive Barker book!
