Bruges-La-Morte by Georges Rodenbach

4.0

Bruges La Morte (Bruges The Dead) is the beautifully atmospheric story of a descent into madness, set in late 19th century Bruges. I read it for the descriptions of Bruges (which were wonderful), the melodramatic gothic protagonist was a bonus.

Our protagonist's wife dies and instead of trying to get over his loss, he dedicates his life to mourning her. He moves to Bruges, withdraws from society and spends all his time feeling sorry for himself. After five years of this carry-on, he unsurprisingly goes mad. Dude seriously needs to get a grip - he has issues with how he treats women (hasn't figured out that we don't just exist to entertain is fantasies) and doesn't know how lucky he is. He can afford to retire at 40, hire a housekeeper to do everything for him, move to Bruges and spend all his time walking along the beautiful canals, yet all he does is complain.
