Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston
5.0
5 stars.
Y'ALL. this did NOT need to slap as hard as it did. ashley poston, you continue to wreck me with your heartfelt, wonderful characters. rosie was just *chef's kiss* the perfect protagonist. i loved her devotion to books, not taking shit from men who don't treat her right, her charisma, just... literally everything about her.
and VANCE. from what little i saw of him in 'the princess and the fangirl,' i really was skeptical about a whole book dedicated to his story. but now? SOMEONE PROTECT THIS BOY AT ALL COSTS. listen i'm such a sucker for so-called bad boys who actually just have been through A Lot and need someone to hit them upside the head. seeing vance slowly go from the closed-off person he was to being completely open with rosie was such a great journey, plus I LOVED THAT HE'S FRIENDS WITH IMOGEN it was so nice to have her back!
speaking of friendships, all of the friendships in this book were perfect? rosie, quinn, and annie were the perfect trio of characters (and i *loved* that quinn was non-binary and was competing to be crowned homecoming "overlord" LEGENDS ONLY). then imogen and vance were so fun too, with them being video game teammates and imogen calling vance out on his shit constantly.
but the true icing on the cake is how perfect the beauty and the best retelling part of this story was! rosie and vance were just so amazing, starting off hating each other, to a tentative friendship, to eventually falling in love over shared afternoons reading starfield novels. they are probably my fave couple of the once upon a con series, tbh.
anyway, this got long but PLEASE READ THIS SERIES it's so *good*. i don't know if there are going to be more or not (i don't know who they'd follow in a fourth book) but i would not say no if there were more coming *eyes emoji*
