Wow. This book was INTENSE and IMPACTFUL. It touched on so many important real-world issues while still remaining a very unique fantasy. There were so many important takeaways and thought provoking moments.

One that really got me thinking was how people can use religion as an excuse to perpetuate hatred. Claiming that horrendous atrocities against non-believers are “God’s will”, but forgetting these atrocities can sometimes be executed through a so-called “righteous” man’s actions. It demonstrated beautifully how blind faith leads to ignorance; and ignorance is bliss for those who ignore the truth.

This book had explicit commentary on both sexism and racism and bigotry in general. A lot of it was difficult and frustrating to read.

Though there was a lot of injustice and hatred and ignorance in this story, it still managed to have a big heart in the end. The backbone of it all was acceptance, community, honesty, and love.

M. L. Wang I don’t know how you created such a cool world and such an incredibly unique magic system and storyline. It was brutal and tragic and so so so well done.
