There's so much I can't say about this because I don't want to give any part of the story away. But oh this book hit all of my emotions. I was so glad I went in not knowing much at all; it deals with such complicated and upsetting moral issues, but still drags the joy out of every moment that it can.

I loved that so many of the minor characters got a chapter to really get into their mindset, and see part of Lou's story from the outside. It showed all the different sides of the story and made me more sensitive to how everyone felt. And even the unlikable characters (like Patrick and Steven) had motivations you could understand and nothing was a simple case of right or wrong.

Will's struggles were hard to read about and it's easy to see why he's so closed off at first. But as Lou understands him better, so do we. And there is so much humour in the book, particularly between Lou and Will but also in little throwaway scenes (the altercation with Lou's neighbours is just brilliant).

Right up to the end I had no idea what was going to happen. This might be the first time I can remember having to physically cover up the next pages in a book so I wouldn't skip ahead to see how it ends, I was that desperate to know.
