The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo
by Amy Schumer
I went on a two-week-long road trip and my friend brought this along as an audiobook for us to listen to along the way. It was glorious, and just the thing to keep us awake and engaged on the long 500+ mile days.
I went into this knowing very little about the author or her story, and enjoyed it thoroughly all the same. Amy narrated her own book for the audio version, and I loved how she did it and it was a blast to listen to. She covers many topics, some just for amusement, some from her own life, and some from an activist point of view. Almost all of the book is funny, but a lot of it is serious too, and it includes a lot of ground on two deadly important topics - abusive relationships and gun control. There's a lot to learn, and a lot to be entertained by, and the two go hand-in-hand to really make this a learning as well as a fun experience. Amy doesn't shirk from pointing out that her life is the result of some luck and a lot of really hard work, and reminds the reader/listener of that multiple times, which is important in today's instant gratification society.
This was a funny and interesting memoir, but it is not for youngsters or those who clutch their pearls at the word vagina. If you've got a wicked sense of humor, enjoy SNL or similar comedy shows, then you'll probably love this book just as I did.
