The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

Oh dear. What an upsetting yet raw book this was. I hate that I annotated about Gregor’s sister and his relationship to her. This book can be viewed through the lens of many isolations and grievances that society does not like. And I read it through the mental illness mentality. I resonated so much with the lines. Most of the pages have some sort of of underlining/highlighting that just stabbed me. My favorite: “Before, when all the doors were locked, everyone kept trying to come in, and now that he had opened the one door and the others had apparently been opened during the day, no one came in, and the keys were sticking in their locks from the outside.” This line made me think of how people who suffer from loud minds often DO ask for help from others, but the second that person opens up, their surroundings stop “coming in the door.” One of my favorite booktokers said this is for the black sheep of the family, and I wholeheartedly agree.
