Vinland Saga 1 by Makoto Yukimura
I think this is the definition of a must read media.
Coping with grief, feelings of isolation and suicidal thoughts, dealing with budding anger and hatred planted by a world seemingly uncaring. A world where keeping peace and joy seems more and more distant as you age, and the increase in stress and physical pain with age. But it shows positive growth from these struggles, and shows the importance of community and what it means to keep trying. There are so many scenes that made me sob, I think this is the most emotional comic penned, and it doesn't slack on action and historical accuracy. It uses proper language of the Lnu tribe, and he will even correct mistakes of linguistics or historical accuracy in further issues with notes. He puts effort into learning and his emotional examinations and it shows.
"Young was I once and wandered alone.
Naught of the world I knew
But rich did I feel when a comrade I found
For man is mans delight." - an old Norse poetic verse used in the story (I forget the actual historical source)
I hope everyone gets the chance to read this story, or at least gains the understanding for why I would recommend it with such fervor. Not to mention being a chapter by chapter comic, it is an extremely quick read in my eyes.
