The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
5.0

It has been a long time since I've read a book so beautiful. I was hooked by the end of the short first chapter. It was so gorgeously written that I read it aloud to my boyfriend, who succinctly told me that he needed to read the book after I was done.

It's a simple book at its core. Like others have said, it's a short book about the perseverance of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. But it is also a book about maintaining one's humanity when it seems the rest of the world has lost theirs. But most of all, it's a book about survival: food, water, life. Because even when the world is in a state of chaos, we are still the same people we were before. Our basic needs and motivations don't change. The Cellist of Sarajevo explores the sameness that links all humans, and does so successfully that the reader is able to place themselves in the war zone that was Sarajevo. Steven Galloway genius novel is a portal-- transporting the reader to a different time and place, and allowing them to feel the emotions as if they were truly there.

The Cellist of Sarajevo is a fabulous read, one you will be unable to put down, nor forget after it is over.
