“she chuckled, though tears trickled down her cheeks. He wondered if laughter and tears had their origins in the same place.”
For a (very) short story, this one definitely packed an emotional punch. I found myself highlighting several parts and even teared up towards the end. This touches on familial and cultural pressures, friendship, grief, love and finding your own identity/passions. I think it says something about an author when they’re able to convey so much in a super condensed piece of work. I look forward to reading more from Abraham Verghese.
