The Whispering Muse
by Laura Purcell
The writing style of this book took a minute for me to get into. I felt that it was trying too hard to replicate classical styles but with a distinctly modern tone which just left things a little agonising. However, this soon picked up and shifted to a much more justified use of sweeping metaphors and description's. The characters also helped, each being written with their own individual voice no matter how minor their role. While some of the characters actions towards the end of the book didn’t really make sense, I was invested in them for the most part and felt suspense at what was going to happen to them. The plot itself also helped to build this suspense with its gory details and constant twists. I did feel that this slumped a little at the end where it felt like the plot was coming to an end but just kept going. This said, I did greatly enjoy this book for the most part.
