The Education of Little Tree
by Forrest Carter
Reading this book, and learning about its history afterwards, has been an intense experience. I simply can't rate it.
I loved it! It was so sweet, and rendered the natural world and the Cherokee world-view so beautifully. BUT IT IS A TOTAL FAKE! The author sold it as a true story, but it was completely fictional. Forrest Carter was absolutely not a Cherokee. He made it all up!
AND IT GETS SO MUCH WORSE. Beyond impersonating a Cherokee and selling fiction as autobiography, HE WAS A TOTALLY INSANE KKK MEMBER AND HATEFUL RACIST SEGREGATIONIST!

I found this out a few days after I finished the book. I feel sad and disappointed; simply assigning the book the category "fiction" isn't enough. A big part of what made it so special was that I thought I was learning real things about what it was like to grow up with real Cherokee grandparents. The sweet, beautiful experience of reading this book was stolen from me. And, I feel absolutely disgusted by the life of the author.
This entire experience has been bewildering and disappointing.
